Reading Gulzar – Hazaar Rahein

Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thoughts.

– Percy Bysshe Shelley.

If ever proof was needed, this here is it. One of the slowest, most lyrical songs you’ll find, and one in stark contrast to the previous ‘Humne Dekhi Hai’. Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar give voices to one of the shortest post-mortems of a relationship. In fact, just the manner in which Kishore drags the opening ‘Hazaar raahein…’ is divine. The last couplet of the penultimate verse – a reality of every relationship, and one we can’t escape.

Film: Thodi Si Bewafai

Music: Khayyam

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar

Lyrics: 🙂

Here goes…

Hazaar Rahein

Hazaar rahein, mud ke dekhi,

Kahin se koi sada na aayi,

Badi wafa se, nibhaai tumne,

Humaari thodi si bewafaai…

Jahaan se tum mod mud gaye the,

Ye mod ab bhi wahin pade hain,

Hum apne pairon mein jaane kitne,

Bhanwar lapete hue khade hain…

Kahin kisi roz yoon bhi hota,

Humaari haalat tumhaari hoti,

Jo raat humne guzaari mar ke,

Woh raat tumne guzaari hoti…

Tumhein ye zidd thi ke hum bulaate,

Humein ye ummeed ki wo pukaarein,

Hai naam honthon pe ab bhi lekin,

Awaaz mein pad gayi daraarein…

Hazaar rahein, mud ke dekhi,

Kahin se koi sada na aayi,

Badi wafa se, nibhaai tumne,

Humaari thodi si bewafaai…

There’s no poetry on the silver screen of Hindi cinema like Gulzar’s. If there’s a song you want the words to, please let me know in the comments below.

To be quite frank, who does? The genius of the man shines still, in times when…well, we all know precisely how pathetic the times are.

Anyway, thank you for taking out the time to comment – really appreciate it – and apologies that I’ve been so late in making my reply. I’ve covered many of his other pieces, and, in fact, am on the look out for suggestions all the time.

Hope to hear from you soon…
