Reading Gulzar – Dil Dhoondhta Hai

I had spoken of 6 songs of love, and this is the last. None is better suited. While the others were the myriad expressions of love between people, this is the love of life. And, undoubtedly, one of his finest works, a landmark of Hindi film poetry.

I believe ‘fursat’ is a word that cannot sufficiently be translated into English – there will remain an emotion regardless of how hard you try. In fact, I have an audio CD where Gulzar talks of how ‘fursat’ isn’t an easy thing, isn’t merely the absence of work or pressure, it is more.

So much more!

And to that ‘fursat’, that stage of relaxation and infinity that seems almost always out of reach, and yet, almost always a coveted dream – to that ‘fursat’, I hope, we reach soon.

Film: Mausam

Music: Madan Mohan

Singer: Bhupinder Singh

Lyrics: 🙂

Here goes…

Dil Dhoondhta Hai

Dil dhoondhta hai phir wahi fursat ke raat din,

Baithe rahe tasavvur-e-jaana kiye hue…

Jaadon ki narm dhoop aur aangan mein let kar,

Aankhon par kheench kar tere aanchal ke saaye ko,

Aundhe pade rahe kabhi karvat liye hue…

Ya garmiyon ki raat jo purvaaiyaan chale,

Thandi, safed chaadaron pe jaage der tak

Taaron ko dekhte rahe chat par pade hue…

Barfili sardiyon mein kisi bhi pahad par,

Vaadi mein goonjti hui khaamoshiyaan sune,

Aankhon mein bheege bheege se lamhein liye hue…

Dil dhoondhta hai phir wahi fursat ke raat din,

Baithe rahe tasavvur-e-jaana kiye hue…

There’s no poetry on the silver screen of Hindi cinema like Gulzar’s. If there’s a song you want the words to, please let me know in the comments below.
