An adaptation of a work of Bulle Shah, the immortal saint, this song speaks of the mystic element of love – where the identity of one is lost in the other. The lover not only joins and mingles into his love, he is destroyed and annihilated by it.

And is grateful for it.

Film: Raavan

Music: A. R. Rahman

Singer: Rekha Bhardwaj and Javed Ali

Lyrics: 🙂

Here goes…

Ranjha Ranjha

Ranjha ranjha kardi we main aape ranjha hoi,

Ranjha ranjha saddo ni, mainu heer na aankho koi…

Ranjha ranjha na kar heere, jag badnaami hoye,

Patti patti jhad jaawe par khushbu chup na hoye,

Begunah pakda gaya yaaron, ishq mein jakda gaya yaaron,

Aankh ke dosh mere, bewajah pakda gaya,

Aankh se hatati nahin arre hatati nahin…

Sote-sote bolta hoon, kabhi bolte-bolte sota hoon,

Kya jaane kya hota, kabhi jalti aag tatolta hoon,

Ek baar to aake dekhe woh bhi…

Jal ja, ishq mein jal ja, jale so kangan hoye,

Jalti raakh laga le maathe, lage so chandan hoye…

Waqt katata bhi nahin, waqt rukta bhi nahin,

Dil hai sajde mein magar ishq jhukta bhi nahin,

Bina tere raatein, arre raatein, kyun lambi lagti hain

Kabhi tera gussa, teri baatein, kyun achhi lagti hain

Yeh dolte koyle, arre koyle, ab rakhna mushkil hai…

Chal junoon chalte rahein, tu kahin thehre nahin,

Dil agar aa bhi gaya, woh tera shaher nahin,

Bina tere saansein, arre saansein, kahin khatm na ho jaayein,

Sabhi teri yaadein, sabhi yaadein, kahin bhasm na ho jaayein,

Sulagte koyle, arre koyle, ab bujhna mushkil hai…

Ranjha ranjha kardi we main aape ranjha hoi,

Ranjha ranjha saddo ni, mainu heer na aankho koi…

Ranjha ranjha na kar heere, jag badnaami hoye,

Patti patti jhad jaawe par khushbu chup na hoye…

There’s no poetry on the silver screen of Hindi cinema like Gulzar’s. If there’s a song you want the words to, please let me know in the comments below.
